GEO for Ecommerce: How Products Get Recommended in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode

Updated · Citepoint · 6 min read

Short answer

To get products recommended in AI shopping answers, make your product data complete, accurate and identical on the page, in structured data and in your feeds. ChatGPT's shopping research reads price, availability, reviews, specs and images across the web, and OpenAI says its results are organic. Google's AI Mode draws on the Shopping Graph and Merchant Center data. Then earn independent reviews, publish buying guides that answer shopper questions, and track which products AI names.

Key takeaways

  • OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping research looks for up-to-date price, availability, reviews, specs and images, and that its results are organic and based on publicly available retail sites.
  • Price and availability must match everywhere. Google compares your Merchant Center feed with your landing page and structured data, and says prices must be in the HTML your server returns.
  • OpenAI says it is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout in ChatGPT. Purchases complete on merchant-owned sites, and Shopify stores that sell to US customers are already connected through Shopify Catalog.
  • AI referrals to retail sites are growing from a small base: Adobe measured a 693.4% rise over the 2025 holiday season, and Similarweb says consumers who use AI in shopping research also use search 89% of the time.

How do AI engines recommend products?

ChatGPT's shopping research, launched on November 24, 2025, asks clarifying questions and then, in OpenAI's words, "looks across the internet for up-to-date information like price, availability, reviews, specs, and images." It is powered by a version of GPT-5 mini trained for shopping tasks to read trusted sites, cite reliable sources and synthesize across them. OpenAI says results are organic and based on publicly available retail sites, and that the tool "might make mistakes about product details like price and availability."

OpenAI's September 2025 post on Instant Checkout adds that product results are "organic and unsponsored, ranked purely on relevance to the user." When several merchants sell the same product, it said ChatGPT considers availability, price, quality, whether a merchant is the primary seller and whether Instant Checkout is enabled. OpenAI has since started offering ads in ChatGPT. It says they are "always clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT's answers" and that advertising "does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides."

Google's AI Mode shopping draws on the Shopping Graph, which Google said in May 2025 held more than 50 billion product listings, each with details like reviews, prices, color options and availability.

What data do AI shopping answers depend on?

Data Where it lives Why it matters
Product page Your site, in server-rendered HTML ChatGPT shopping research reads product pages directly
Structured data Product, Offer and MerchantReturnPolicy markup Google uses it for merchant listings and return information
Merchant Center feed Google Merchant Center Free listings can show in Search, Images, Lens, YouTube, Gemini and the Shopping tab
OpenAI product feed OpenAI's commerce program for approved partners Gives ChatGPT catalog data, with nine required fields and a recommended daily full feed
Shopify agentic storefronts Shopify Makes products available to ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot through Shopify Catalog, and to Google AI Mode, Gemini and Meta through Shopify's Google and Meta sales channels, for eligible stores

OpenAI's merchant page says you don't need a product feed if ChatGPT already crawls your site, but "feeds give you greater control over how your products appear." OpenAI's commerce documentation says recommended attributes like rich media, reviews and performance signals "improve ranking, relevance, and user trust."

How do you keep price and availability consistent?

This is the most practical job, and the one that goes wrong most often. Google's Merchant Center help says Googlebot compares the price in your data source with the price on your landing page and in your structured data, and a mismatch can get a product disapproved. It also says Googlebot reads the HTML your server returns, so "if data on your website is passed dynamically with JavaScript after the page is loaded, this will trigger an error." Price mismatches "may lead to an account suspension."

OpenAI's feed specification makes the same point: sale-window dates don't schedule price changes, so you update current prices and availability in the feed when they change. Make one system the source of truth, push it to the page, the markup and every feed, and test with the product page's raw HTML.

What structured data should you add?

Google separates product snippets, for pages where people can't buy directly, from merchant listings, for pages where they can. It recommends providing "as much rich product information as available, without concern for the exact experiences that will use it." Merchant listings require name, image and offers with a price and currency, and recommend properties such as aggregateRating, review, gtin, brand, shippingDetails, hasMerchantReturnPolicy and availability.

You can set a store-wide return policy with MerchantReturnPolicy nested under Organization markup. Google says providing both markup and a Merchant Center feed maximizes your eligibility and helps it verify your data. For AI features specifically, Google says there is no special schema to add, so treat all of this as the foundation.

What is happening with AI checkout?

It is changing quickly, so check the dates. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025, starting with Etsy. Its current merchants page says: "We're moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience in ChatGPT and prioritizing better shopping discovery and merchant-owned checkout experiences. Users can discover and evaluate products in ChatGPT, but purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps." It also says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT and that shopping is currently live for ChatGPT users in the US.

Shopify's help center says agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores, and that ChatGPT acts as a discovery-focused referrer: "You don't need to do anything for your products to be discovered by ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog." Google describes its Universal Commerce Protocol as an open standard for agentic actions in AI Mode and Gemini, with merchants remaining the merchant of record, and offers a waitlist.

Do reviews and third-party sources matter?

Yes. OpenAI says it trained its shopping model to read trusted sites and cite reliable sources, and its commerce documentation lists reviews among the feed attributes that improve ranking. A University of Toronto preprint found AI search engines show a systematic bias toward earned media over brand-owned content. In its electric car example, ChatGPT's sources were 80% earned media, against 56% for Google. Similarweb says AI buying recommendations can give the recommended brand a 2-to-1 advantage over competitors, which is its own claim. Collect real reviews, and get covered in the buying guides and review roundups AI reads. See digital PR for AI citations.

Are shoppers arriving from AI yet?

In small but fast-growing numbers:

Statistic Source
AI traffic to US retail sites rose 693.4% over the 2025 holiday season (Nov 1 to Dec 31) Adobe Analytics, January 7, 2026
In September 2025, AI visitors to US retail sites were 12% more engaged and 5% more likely to convert than non-AI visitors Adobe, October 14, 2025
Adobe forecasts AI traffic to US retail sites to rise 130% in the 2026 holiday season Adobe, September 28, 2026
Referrals from AI platforms to ecommerce sites grew more than 200% in a year but remain small next to search, and 89% of the time, consumers who use AI in shopping research also use search Similarweb, September 10, 2026

What should you do first?

  1. Allow crawlers. Make sure OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot can read product pages. Shopify notes that blocking AI crawlers affects only open-web discovery, not what Shopify Catalog sends to agentic storefronts.
  2. Fix the data. Complete titles, attributes, images, prices, stock and return policy, identical everywhere.
  3. Publish buying guides. Answer "best X for Y" questions with fair comparisons, from your own site.
  4. Earn reviews and coverage. Real customer reviews and independent roundups.
  5. Track the answers. Ask your shopper questions on each engine and record which products are named. Citepoint can track those questions and publish the guide pages that answer them. Feed management is a job for your commerce platform, not for Citepoint.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a product feed to appear in ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI says feeds aren't required if ChatGPT already crawls your site, but they give you more control over how products appear. Feed onboarding is currently for approved partners, and Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated.

Can I pay to be recommended in ChatGPT shopping results?

OpenAI's 2025 posts say product results are organic and unsponsored. It also now offers ads in ChatGPT, which it says are clearly labeled and separate from the answers.

Will blocking AI crawlers remove my Shopify products from ChatGPT?

Not necessarily. Shopify says blocking AI crawlers at robots.txt or the network layer affects only open-web discoverability, and doesn't stop Shopify Catalog from sending your product data to agentic storefronts you've activated.

Does ChatGPT shopping work outside the US?

OpenAI's merchants page says shopping is currently live for ChatGPT users in the US, and that it plans to expand to more merchants and regions over time. Shopify's ChatGPT channel requires that your store sells to customers in the US.

How do I see orders that came from AI?

Shopify says orders from AI channels display in your admin with channel or referrer attribution. For other platforms, add AI referrers such as chatgpt.com to your analytics.
