How to Get Cited in Google AI Mode

Updated · Citepoint · 5 min read

Short answer

AI Mode answers complex questions by breaking them into subtopics, running many searches at once (query fan-out) and writing a response with links to supporting pages from Google's Search index. To get cited, make sure your page is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, cover the question and its likely follow-ups clearly on one page, and build real mentions of your brand elsewhere. Google says no special markup or AI files are required.

Key takeaways

  • AI Mode searches for the sub-questions behind a question, so your page can be cited for a follow-up the buyer never typed.
  • Eligibility is the same as for AI Overviews: indexed, eligible to show with a snippet, and your site set to Include in Search Console.
  • Ahrefs found AI Mode's brand mentions track established-brand signals more closely than ChatGPT's do. That's a correlation, not proof.
  • Search Console's generative AI report shows your impressions in AI Mode. Google Analytics counts AI Mode clicks as Organic Search.

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a Search mode for questions that need exploration, comparison or reasoning. Google introduced it as a Labs experiment on March 5, 2025, built to take multi-part questions and follow-ups and answer them with links to learn more. Google's documentation says it's particularly helpful for queries where complex comparisons are needed, which describes most buyer questions: "best CRM for a five-person agency that lives in Gmail" is a comparison with constraints.

At Google I/O in May 2025, Google explained how it works: AI Mode breaks your question into subtopics and issues many queries at once, a technique it calls query fan-out. Its Deep Search option uses the same technique and can issue hundreds of searches to build a fully cited report.

How does AI Mode choose which pages to cite?

AI Mode and AI Overviews share foundations. Google says both are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, both ground their responses in pages from the Search index, and both may use query fan-out. They can use different models and techniques, though, so the links they show vary. (How Overviews choose is covered in how Google AI Overviews choose sources.)

For a page, that means three things have to be true:

  1. It can be retrieved. It's indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google lists no further technical requirement and says you don't need special markup or AI text files.
  2. It covers a subtopic. Fan-out runs related searches on the subtopics behind a question, so a page that covers pricing, alternatives or integrations gives the system something to retrieve for each.
  3. It's worth citing. Google says unique, non-commodity content with first-hand experience will likely influence your presence more than anything else it recommends.

Does brand strength matter more in AI Mode?

There's some evidence it does. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. AI Mode showed the strongest correlations with branded signals, such as branded anchors (0.628) and branded search volume (0.466). Ahrefs read this as AI Mode favoring brands people already know, and concluded it looked hardest to break into for emerging brands. Ahrefs also says plainly that correlation isn't causation, and found almost no relationship between the number of pages a site has and its AI visibility (about 0.194).

Two takeaways. Don't try to win by publishing volume. And build the footprint that makes a brand familiar: genuine mentions in articles, forums and videos. Google's own guide warns that chasing inauthentic mentions isn't as helpful as it seems, so earn them. See digital PR for AI citations.

How do you write a page for query fan-out?

Start from a buyer question and list the sub-questions an informed buyer would need answered. Then give each one a clearly headed section on the same page. For illustration, take "best help desk for a three-person support team that lives in Slack":

Sub-question Section on the page Format
What does it cost per agent? Pricing, with the date checked Table
Does it work inside Slack? Slack integration, what it does and doesn't do Short paragraph
How long does setup take? Setup time and who can do it Bulleted steps
Is there a free plan? Free plan limits One sentence
What are the alternatives? When to pick something else Table with named rivals
Where does it fall short? Honest limits Bullets

One strong page beats a dozen thin ones. Google's guide says that creating separate content for every query variation, or every fan-out query, mainly to manipulate results violates its scaled content abuse policy, and that a high quantity of pages doesn't make a site better.

How do you check whether AI Mode cites you?

  • Ask the question in AI Mode a few times, signed out if you can, and note the pages it links. Answers vary between runs.
  • Use Search Console. The Generative AI performance report counts your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. Clicks from these features sit inside the Web search type of the main Performance report.
  • Don't expect Analytics to separate it. Google's Analytics documentation puts AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks in the Organic Search channel. See how to track AI traffic in GA4.
  • Track it over time. Citepoint checks AI Mode every day from live Google results for your country and language and shows which of your buyer questions name a competitor.

What mistakes keep pages out of AI Mode?

  • Blocking Googlebot, or using nosnippet or a tight max-snippet on pages you want quoted.
  • Leaving the Search generative AI setting on Exclude after a test.
  • Burying the answer so a snippet can't carry it.
  • Publishing near-duplicate pages for every phrasing.
  • Spending time on llms.txt for Google, which Google says its Search ignores.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

Yes. Google says they may use different models and techniques, so the responses and links vary. They share the same Search foundations and the same eligibility rules.

Do I need to rank first on Google to be cited?

Google says AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, so SEO fundamentals matter, but it doesn't say a first-place ranking is required. Fan-out runs related searches too, and Google says it allows a wider and more diverse set of links than a classic web search, so the pages linked aren't limited to the top results for the exact question.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Mode?

No. Google-Extended covers training of Gemini models and grounding in Gemini apps, and Google says it doesn't affect inclusion in Google Search. To leave AI Mode, use the Search generative AI setting in Search Console.

Can a small brand get cited in AI Mode?

Google says these features offer opportunities for more types of sites to appear. Ahrefs' data suggests established brands have an edge, so pair strong pages with real mentions on the sites buyers trust.

Can I see AI Mode traffic in Google Analytics?

Not separately. Google's default channel definitions put clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Organic Search. Search Console's generative AI report gives you impressions.
