GEO for B2B SaaS: How to Get Recommended When Buyers Ask AI

Updated · Citepoint · 6 min read

Short answer

To get a B2B SaaS product recommended by AI, publish a page for each question buyers ask first, such as best-for, alternatives and comparison questions. Keep pricing and feature pages readable by crawlers, keep your G2 and other review profiles current, earn mentions on the roundups and communities AI cites, and track the answers weekly. In G2's March 2026 survey, 54% of software buyers said AI chatbots influence which vendors make their shortlist, more than any other source.

Key takeaways

  • G2's March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software decision makers found AI chatbots were the top source influencing vendor shortlists (54%), ahead of review sites (43%). G2 sells review-site presence, so weigh it accordingly.
  • 69% of those buyers said a chatbot led them to a different vendor than they had planned, and 33% bought from a vendor they had never heard of.
  • The first prompt is most often category-based (33%) or competitor-based (31%), so best-for, alternatives and comparison pages come first.
  • Many SaaS sites render in the browser. Google says not all bots can run JavaScript, and OpenAI's, Anthropic's and Perplexity's crawler documentation doesn't say whether theirs do, so server-render the pages that matter.

How do B2B software buyers use AI?

Heavily, and increasingly first. G2 surveyed 1,076 B2B software decision makers in March 2026. It found that 51% start research with an AI chatbot more often than Google, and 71% rely on AI chatbots somewhere in the software research process. Forrester's State of Business Buying 2026, based on a survey of nearly 18,000 business buyers fielded in 2025, reports that 94% used AI during their buying process, and that buyers compensate for incomplete or unreliable AI answers by seeking validation from peers, product experts and analysts.

Finding Source
54% say AI chatbots influence which vendors make their shortlist, the top source, ahead of software review sites (43%) G2, March 2026 survey of 1,076 buyers
69% say a chatbot led them to select a different vendor than initially planned, and 33% bought from a vendor they had never heard of G2, same survey
85% think more highly of a vendor cited by AI in its answer G2, same survey
45% say review-site citations are the most confidence-inspiring signal in an AI answer G2, same survey
64% encounter AI inaccuracies a few times a month or more G2, same survey
94% of business buyers used AI in their buying process Forrester, January 2026

Both sources have an interest in the topic, and G2's 69% includes buyers who ended up with a vendor they already knew but hadn't planned on. The direction is still clear: the shortlist is being shaped before anyone visits your site.

What do buyers ask AI first?

G2 asked what the first prompt looked like when buyers researched software. Category-based prompts made up 33%, competitor-based 31%, requirements and process-based 22%, ecosystem-based 9% and budget-based 6%. Each maps to a page you can publish:

First prompt type Page to build Example
Category-based A best-for page for each segment "Best help desk for a five-person support team"
Competitor-based Alternatives and comparison pages "Alternatives to Zendesk for small teams"
Requirements and process Use-case and workflow pages "Help desk with shared inboxes and SLA timers"
Ecosystem Integration pages "Help desk that works with Slack and HubSpot"
Budget A clear pricing page and a cost comparison "Help desk pricing for small teams"

Start from the questions your sales team hears, using how to find the questions buyers ask AI.

Which pages do the engines read?

It depends on the engine. In Citepoint's October 2026 index of software buying questions, 70% of ChatGPT's citations pointed at the websites of the brands it recommended, against 27% for Gemini and 21% for Google AI Overviews. For ChatGPT, your own pricing, feature and comparison pages are the evidence. For Gemini and AI Overviews, third-party roundups, review sites and communities carry more weight. Our guide to the sources AI cites most has the breakdown.

Can AI crawlers read your SaaS site?

Check this first, because many SaaS marketing sites build pages in the browser. Google's documentation says that "server-side or pre-rendering is still a great idea because it makes your website faster for users and crawlers, and not all bots can run JavaScript." We checked the crawler documentation for OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity, and none of it says whether their bots run JavaScript. So the safe approach is to make sure pricing, features, integrations and comparisons are in the HTML the server returns.

Also look past robots.txt. G2 warns that sites can disallow crawlers through indexation directives, CDN settings or bot protection. Our guide to robots.txt for AI crawlers covers the settings, and the free AI Crawler Checker tests yours. Gated content can't be read by crawlers either, so keep the pages you want cited public.

Does structured data help?

It helps Google understand your pages, but Google says there is no special schema for AI features: "There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add." For a SaaS product, two details are worth knowing:

  • SoftwareApplication markup exists to improve how app details appear in Google Search. Its required properties are name, offers.price and either an aggregate rating or a review, so it suits products with real ratings on the page.
  • FAQ rich results no longer appear in Google Search. Google limited them to well-known government and health sites in August 2023 and stopped showing them on May 7, 2026. FAQPage markup brings no visual benefit, though Google has said unused structured data causes no problems, so there's no need to rush to remove it.

Use accurate Organization and SoftwareApplication markup, and match it to visible text. Don't expect it to move AI answers on its own. See schema markup for AI search.

How do you get mentioned where AI looks?

Review sites and communities matter for software. In Peec AI's analysis of 30 million AI citations, published in March 2026, G2 ranked sixth across five platforms and appeared in a platform's top five only for Perplexity. Reddit was first overall and ranked first or second on every engine Peec tested. In our October 2026 index, Google's AI Overviews cited Reddit in 50% and YouTube in 36% of the answers where an Overview appeared.

So the off-site work is concrete:

  1. Keep your G2 and other review profiles complete and current, and ask real customers for reviews.
  2. Contribute to relevant Reddit threads as yourself, with disclosure.
  3. Get included in the roundups AI cites for your category, with a correction, current pricing or a trial account for the author.
  4. Keep your facts identical across your site, profiles and directories.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Pages that only describe features. Buyers ask who a product is for, what it costs and how it compares, so answer those.
  • Hiding pricing. If the only answer is "contact sales", engines may have nothing current to quote from you.
  • Undated claims. Put an updated date on pricing, comparison and integration pages, and keep them current.
  • Treating review profiles as a one-off. Out-of-date listings feed out-of-date answers.

How do you measure it?

Track a fixed set of 20 to 50 buyer questions across the engines, and read visibility and share of voice over rolling periods. Add AI referrals to your analytics with GA4, and add "how did you hear about us" to your sign-up form, because buyers often read the AI answer and search your name later. Citepoint tracks six engines on a schedule and connects the questions you lose to the pages that win them back, and the free scan shows who AI recommends for three of your questions.

Frequently asked questions

Do B2B buyers really start with AI instead of Google?

Many do, but not all. In G2's March 2026 survey, 51% started with an AI chatbot more often than Google, and 80% still used Google somewhere in their buying journey. Plan for both.

Which AI engine matters most for B2B software?

It depends on your buyers, so check where your questions are asked. ChatGPT leans on vendors' own sites in our data, Gemini on roundups and review sites, and Google's AI Overviews on Reddit and YouTube. Perplexity was the only engine with G2 in its top five sources in Peec AI's study.

Should we gate our best content?

Gated pages can't be read by AI crawlers or quoted in answers. Keep the pages you want cited public, and gate only what you're happy to keep out of AI answers.

Do we need a comparison page for every competitor?

Start with the three to five competitors that buyers most often name next to you, and write each page fairly, saying where the competitor is the better fit. A one-sided page reads as an ad.

Does GEO replace SEO for a SaaS company?

No. Google says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for its AI features and that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. GEO builds on SEO with more focus on direct answers, specifics and third-party mentions.
