Guide
Create an llms.txt file for your website
What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a Markdown file at your site root that gives language models a short summary of your site and links to the pages worth reading. It starts with an H1 name, a one-paragraph summary in a blockquote, then sections of links with a line on each.
What to include
Pick the pages that answer buyer questions: product overview, pricing, comparisons, alternatives and documentation. Keep each description to one sentence that says what the page answers. Put nice-to-have pages under an Optional section so models can skip them when context is tight.
Where to put it
Save the file as llms.txt at the root of your domain, next to robots.txt. If you publish pages with Citepoint, your hosted pages get their own llms.txt automatically.
Questions
Good to know.
Does llms.txt improve rankings?
It isn't a ranking factor for Google. It's a convenience for AI assistants and agents that read it, and it costs nothing to publish.
What's the difference between llms.txt and a sitemap?
A sitemap lists every URL for crawlers. llms.txt is a curated, human-readable index of your most useful pages with a line of context on each.
Can I have more than one section?
Yes. Use as many H2 sections as make sense, such as Product, Guides and Docs, plus an Optional section for secondary pages.
